After being exposed to a nuclear accident involving him, he changed from a sombre scientist into a superhero forever.
The novel begins with Comedian, one of the heroes getting murdered in his apartment. The circumstances surrounding the murder seem mysterious. Rorschach one of the heroes from the pack, stumbles upon a deeper conspiracy aimed at terminating all the past superheroes. Meanwhile, Dr. Manhattan is accused of spreading cancer to his colleagues due to high radioactivity emanating from his body. Depressed, he takes shelter on Mars. The rest of the story is this unravelling of this larger conspiracy and how Dr. Manhattan is persuaded to return to save the world from annihilation.
