A R Rehman – Spirit of Music

There was a young man called Dilip Kumar, who had a penchant for music. But, his mother was concerned – how she would support her son’s zest for music. In a moment of contemplation, she consulted a pious man – who asked her to embrace his faith and change her son’s name to Allah Rakha Rehman – and rest as they say his history. It is no co-incidence that flashes of brilliance was revealed early, when he composed for his first movie – Roja (1992), which won him a national award. A R Rehman went from strength to strength and his association with Mani Ratnam and Shankar has become stuff of legend. All three rose to prominence at the same time, and the popularity of many of films directed by both Mr.Ratnam and Mr. Shankar rode on the success of exemplary music composed by Rehman. Bombay, Gentleman, Kadhalan,Indian and others had a touch of Rehman’s music written all over them. Incidentally, Rehman, also composes the background score for films he composes music for. It was not far away, that Bollywood would invite the maestro to compose – and the his first Hindi composition – Rangeela climbed the charts in no time.

His patriotic side was reflected, when he rendered his own version of Vande Mantaram and went to compose Jana Gana Mana, the national song. And, more recently – he made the country proud, when he won the First Oscar (Film Soundtrack) for SlumDog Millionaire. These are some of the glimpses of the meteoric rise of A R Rehman.
