Love in the time of Cholera – A Classic


Nobel Laureate, Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a Columbian Novelist is known for his short stories, novels, who also dabbles in-between with screenwriting & Journalism.  Fondly known as Gabo, this writer has written two of the best selling novels in recent times – One Hundred Years of Solitude & Love in the time of Cholera. The later novel is a love-story with a complex plot twist, where the lovers rekindle their interest in each other when they reach their seventies.
The two meet each other, during their youth, but the boy’s (Florentino) advances are rejected by the girl. Since, the girl (Fermina) considers herself to be naive to be falling in love. At 21, her marriage is arranged and she enters wedlock with her parent’s consent. Later, she discovers her husband’s (Juvenal) infidelity and the marriage tends to meander off-track, with his outlook towards life seem too idealistic for Fermina. Fermina later realises the wisdom and maturity in Florentino, and they both allow the love to blossom in their old age. The novel was published in 1985, and the English translation came out in 1988, the novel with an adapted screenplay was made into a film with the similar name.
