It's been
no secret that Nokia has been struggling off late to revive itself and has
quite a bit at stake with its latest release, the
Nokia
Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710 phones running Windows 7.5.
Before I
jump full on into the review, let me remind you of
Nokia
Lumia 800's specs:
- It's running Windows 7.5
a.k.a Mango
- Dimensions are: 116.5 x 61.2 x
12.1 mm
- Weight is 142 g, which is
enough to know its there but not too much to become a burden to carry
around
- Screen is 3.7'' AMOLED
ClearBlack Touch Screen with a resolution for 480x800
- Battery gives a sturdy talk
time of 13 hours with 265 hours of standby through 1450 mAh power (Windows
7 uses battery power very judiciously. You'll face no problem getting
through a full day).
- The phones is running on a
1.4 GHz Qualcomm processor, augmented by 512 MB RAM, 16 GB of external
storage (which is not expandable)
- Has an 8MP camera with dual
LED flash capable of shooting 720p videos at 30 fps
Design
Nokia's build
quality is absolutely outstanding. Some would go out on a limb to call it
legendary even. Adhering to it's standards, the
Nokia
Lumia 800 mobile has been bestowed with a curved glass display.
Another feature
which I find missing in some high-end phones today is the presence of a
physical camera button, since tapping a touchscreen for a photo almost always
tends to blur the photo.
The look and feel of
the device is quite satisfying for its price.
However there are
some design quirks on
Nokia
Lumia 800 mobile. The top edge of the phone features a 3.5 mm audio jack, a
USB charging port and the external card port. While it's good that the ports is
featured externally, the flaps used to cover these ports look like they'll soon
succumb to repeated usage.
OS
Windows 7.5 has a
lot of cool features. The tiled UI lets your access your favourite apps quickly
and also allows multi-tasking. The OS' most useful feature is tomb-stoning,
which essentially takes you back to the exact spot in an app etc, that you were
in before closing the screen.
Camera
The camera is HD
recording enabled and gives resolution of up to 2448 x 3264 pixels
Overall, it's more
than a fair deal for its price. An intuitive OS combined with excellent build,
Nokia
Lumia 800 is definitely here to
stay.
