Blue Ocean Strategy

Traditional business outlook is about creating a product or service better than competition and leading the way by creating unprecedented lead in the market segment. There is a slightly different approach when it comes to the strategy being spelt out , the ‘Blue Ocean Strategy’ is all about tapping into unexplored markets by gauging the need; of the shifting consumer perception.  The main mechanism which is focussed upon here is the need to create a product utility with strategic pricing to overcome the traditional adoption hurdles. There are four organisational hurdles, when it comes to adopting such a strategy, which are – cognitive, resource-based, motivational and politics-based. The pillar of this strategy is “Value Innovation” – the concept makes sure the company creates value for itself and for the buyer. The concept is in direct contradiction to Michael Porter’s idea of successful businesses to be either low-cost providers or niche players. The idea was proposed by Charles WL Hill in 1988, while contradicting the Michael Porter’s model for competition. India after Gandhi: History of World’s Largest Democracy

The book written by the noted historian Ramchandra Guha chronicles the history of modern India, right from the beginning of the freedom movement to the recent past. The book begins with the British Raj, when the ruling government believed India to be too mature and another school of thought believed India to be too young to self-govern itself. Then came along Jawaharlal Nehru – the most trusted confidant of Mahatma Gandhi, who was Oxford educated and had view of the world, which was quite different from a contemporary Indian at that point in time. The Nehru era lasted for 15-years and during the time – India was able to frame her constitution, give equal rights to men and woman. And mostly, he believed a rightful place for India in the context of the world – and engineered movements like Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in world afflicted by Cold-war syndrome. Later in 1966, Nehru’s daughter – Indira Gandhi became the Prime Minister of India, although she continued her father’s good work, India for the first-time after Independence had emergency imposed on itself. Post her death, it was her second son Rajiv Gandhi, who took over the mantle and became one of the most popular leaders of a youthful India. Also, the book captures images of India, which had its fair share of ugly incidents like communal riots, which scarred the country for long. Poor Economics by Abhijit Banerjee & Esther Duflo

This book is a rarity, it might not be most prolific book discussed on any business platform nor its’ meant for the eager business student. However, what makes the book sparkle is the kindness that blossoms through, making a pitch for the reasons why poverty perpetuates in the world. Loaded with hard facts and figures, the authors go about peeling the problems at hand, more like deciphering a puzzle to make the readers understand, the overlooked factors that needs to be given adequate attention to make their argument eloquent. The main focus of the book is on poverty traps, which big profile authors in the domain attribute poverty to. In theory, the phenomenon is a self-perpetuating array of factors that make the poor experience to pave way for a depreciating and at times stagnating lifestyle. The interventions suggested in the book are tried and tested means, but are backed by appropriate reasoning; facts and figures. One such example is about distributing short-term social services for Free or with heavy subsidy. Often, it is observed that social services are not utilised due to misinterpreted perception in the social context. Such interventions seek to break the skewed perception, however, again as with all other human experiences, it is loaded heavily towards inconsistencies. Women in one part of the world might react differently to such intervention in the social domain. Overall, the book subtly acknowledges the presence of poverty traps, but the intervening social actors, do not exactly seem to know, where to put the ladders in the first place. They do disapprove demand based development approach in social sector, but development in their view are precipitated from small ‘nudges’ and ‘pushes’ at appropriate places to encourage people act in their best interest, rather being pushed into it.
