Tangled – The Animated Movie

Tangled – one of the most anticipated movies last summer. Pundits called it, as a make or break movie for Disney. The movie took unusually long (2-yrs) to make and with an estimated cost of the movie stood at $200 million. This kind of cost was unusual for an animated movie in the industry parlance. However, when the movie came out, it proved everyone wrong and the results were there to be seen by audience. The classic fairytale of Rapunzel was recaptured with the same old fairytale magic built into it. The story of a beautiful girl – with extremely long hair, consisting of healing powers is cursed and kept inside a castle. This time around the girl is rescued by small time thug and not by a prince charming. The simplicity of the movie, is its depiction of the characters in the most humane manner- the expression-filled eyes; the feisty texture Rapunzel’s hair all make the end result – tantalizing. Calvin & Hobbes – Tenth Anniversary Book

Calvin & Hobbes was a cartoon character created by the American Artist – Bill Patterson. The comic strip is a culmination of interaction between a 6-year old, Hobbes and a humorously human-like tiger called Calvin. Surprisingly, the name John Calvin belonged to a French reformists – John Calvin and Thomas Hobbes. At its peak, the comic strip was published in over 2, 400 newspapers and till date nearly 45million copies of the comic book has been sold. Calvin & Hobbes is an interesting interaction between the boy and the tiger, and Calvin’s parents. Since the duo has most of their interactions at home, it brings out enormously pleasurable moments of surprise and humor. Calvin parents happen to middle-class householders, who have their own reasons to worry about, and the desperation of handling a 6-yr does come through at occasions. Parents happen to be strictly down-to-earth sensible folks who happen to handle, adeptly the outlandish behaviour of Calvin in combination with Hobbes. Other characters in the strip include Susie Derkins, who happens to be the classmate of Calving living right across the street. Other minor characters in the book include – Rosalyn – babysitter; Moe – Calvin’s bully happen to feature in some of the comic book titles which have come till now. Mr. Patterson, finally, in 1995 decided to shut-shop on the comic strip after it came out with the 3, 160th comic strip, in his final statement – he makes a point to tell his audience of not been completely satisfied of his decision of closing the curtains on the comic strip. However, he emphasises of moving to better creative pursuits with lesser demands on deadline and more freedom for creative liberty. Geek Nation by Angela Saini

India as a country continues to surprise the world at large. Some like to call it the land of paradoxes and perhaps rightly so – one of the most religious countries in the world, and the government seems to have put its onus on standing firmly behind; developing the scientific talent pool of the country to usher it on the path of sustainable progress. The author Angela Saini, stresses upon the fact that India – with its poor pool of natural resources, is completely banking upon improving its technological prowess and ingenuity – through its most priced resource, which it has in abundance – its People.  The technological superiority when it comes to India, is not a new phenomenon, but owes much of its rich ancient history. Going by the book’s content, there is resurgence in India for finding scientific answers through the ancient texts – like the Vedas, where the metaphorical description is at times hard to decipher for the average reader. It is only now that technology marvels like metal chariots described in the Hindu legends, actually did exist in the past (courtesy the ancient texts). On the other end of the spectrum there is the contemporary science and technology which seeks to solve problems related to nutrition, food and disease. There are government funded organisations, which gradually are discovering new solutions and also are incorporating ancient pearls of wisdom into its realm of knowledge. The books does not seek to glorify India, but aims to throw new light on the country called India, which is grabbing world attention due to its intellectual capital. The book and other Indian books are available on the online shopping site, homeshop18.com. On the online shop, the book is available for Rs.319, with a 36% off on the MRP.
